Dearest friends and supporters of Palomares Empowerment/Transformative Mediation Program
As many of you know, we have another honor and invitation by Honorable Dorothy W. Nelson, judge of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit to speak at her weekly Baha’i information gathering at her house in Pasadena. Some of you know that Judge Nelson and her late husband Judge james F. Nelson have been hosting these informal weekly gatherings at their home for nearly 40 years. Both judges who have been members of the Baha’i community and serving its administration in many capacities, have been most vocal supporters and advocates of world peace, elimination of racism, equality of men and women, independent investigation of truth, the oneness of all humanity and harmony of religion and science to name a few.
Judge Dorothy Nelson is recognized for having introduced to the judicial system of this country the process of mediation and conflict resolution. Western Justice Center (WJC) was founded in 1987 by a group of visionary judges, lawyers and civic leaders led by the Honorable Dorothy W. Nelson, judge of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. Housed in Pasadena’s historic Maxwell House, WJC was created to develop creative programs to teach students, teachers and members of the community ways to resolve conflict peacefully.
We are excited to see that our Palomares Empowerment program is now into its 4rth year and this year an in school every day program with the leadership of Superintendent Richard martinez, the guidance and support of visionary principal Dr. Camille Beal and District officials such as Fernando Mesa. This year we have integrated transformative mediation training for the students who aspire to develop their own character, cultivating social emotional skills to elevate the culture of the school hoping for a greater appreciation of the importance of promoting oneness of all humanity, peace and harmony in our homes, our schools and our communities.
In our presentation we will touch upon the significance of teaching social emotional skills and skills of transformative mediation and consultation in our schools. We would briefly talk about our collaborative process of service to the community, our curriculum designed to accommodate the needs of our students at the Pomona Unified School District and how our Empowerment/Transformative mediation training is designed and implemented to make a wholistic difference in the culture of the school and the social, emotional, psychological, academic, spiritual, development and wholeness of our community celebrating our unity in diversity.
