Abstract

Postmodernism which takes the introspection and criticism of modernity as its mission, is a profound proposition inevitable to all aspects of social practice. Any country or nation, engaged, or to be engaged, in modernization should treat all the issues of modernism with a serious theoretical attitude and with an academic conscience responsible for the destiny of their own nations. They should be alert to the imminent crises caused by modernization and involve themselves in the search for remedy. This paper intends to analyze and introduce the moral education enlightened by the spirit of postmodernism and present a panorama of ethic and moral education against this background, for the sake of providing, on the basis of an evaluation of the merits and demerits of the postmodern moral education, some inspiration and implication for the present phase of moral education reform in China.

Aesthetic Education and Civism

Abstract

Civism education in colleges ought to be a kind of aesthetic education, the students should be cultivated to establish emotional identification with civic society through aesthetic education, and gradually form their civism. The emphasis of civism education should be focused on citizen’s emotional identification with civic images, because emotional identification forms a cohesive force to civic culture and plays important role in civic development. To achieve the aim of civism education, we should improve students’ abilities of observing, investigating, analyzing and reasoning, instruct them to investigate civic society, research the aesthetic and social significance of civic images in contemporary civic construction.

Colleges should put forward a new thinking about the construction of civic culture: strengthening students’ cognition and experience to civic image, cultivating the social elite’s identification with civic image and citizen consciousness based on aesthetic experience.

Aesthetic-civism education is important for China’s cultural construction and education nowadays. China now is in a progress of citifying, construction of civic culture, especially citizen quality, is now an important element that will affect future development in China. Aesthetic-civism education focused on cultivating students’ civism through image cognition and emotional experience will boost development of civic culture in a constructive way.

Xiaokang Gao, professor of the Dept. of Chinese Language and Literature of Sun Yat-sen University. Gao was born on Feb. 2nd, 1954 in Xi’an, China.

Received degree: Doctor of Liberal Arts (L.D.) in Nanjing Normal University, 1998. Master of Liberal Arts in Nanjing Normal University, 1987. Bachelor of Liberal Arts in Lanzhou University, 1982.

Specialty: Aesthetics of Arts, accomplished in studying contemporary mass culture and civic aesthetic culture.
